“You have plenty of grain laid up for many years.”
“And he told them this parable: “The ground of a certain rich man yielded an abundant harvest. He thought to himself, ‘What shall I do? I have no place to store my crops.’ “Then he said, ‘This is what I’ll do. I will tear down my barns and build bigger ones, and there I will store my surplus grain. And I’ll say to myself, “You have plenty of grain laid up for many years. Take life easy; eat, drink and be merry.” ’ “But God said to him, ‘You fool! This very night your life will be demanded from you. Then who will get what you have prepared for yourself?’ “This is how it will be with whoever stores up things for themselves but is not rich toward God.””Luke 12:16–21, NIV
Faith in God vs hoarding. One man stored his treasures and wasn’t rich towards God. What happened?
Jesus issued a warning to those who store up things for themselves and refuse to give God what he deserves.
His parable tells of one who accumulates many things and only thinks of how he can store all his stuff. Once the hoarder figures this out, he sets out to eat, drink and be merry. His problem is solved.
Or not. He doesn’t know that he has a bigger problem, a heart problem. He is so consumed with earthly stuff that he neglected to give to God.
The man who stored his grain in the barns gave God no:
So where is God in this story? I think a scorecard would look something like this:
The man was unprepared for judgment because of his wrong priorities.
And as it is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgment.Hebrews 9:27
But judgment came. And the man who hoarded wasn’t ready because he prioritized his control, his abilities, his barns, his success, his wealth over what was more important, God. Hoarding can cause us to trust more in our possessions than God. It often leads to selfishness because it is hard to give up what you dutifully put aside for yourself and your family. Being rich towards God means being rich toward the poor and needy as the Bible teaches from the Old Testament to the New. We must seek God and his strength to avoid sinfully hoarding what rightfully belongs to God. Let us obey him in all things including how we manage the resources he gives us.
Lord, search our hearts and let us know if we are rich towards you. If we are more focused on earthly riches than spiritual, please turn our hearts and minds towards you. Forgive us for failing to worship you. You are worthy of our praise, morning and night. You rule the heavens and the earth. We bow before you. Thank you for being faithful and just to forgive us our sins and cleanse us from all unrighteousness. Amen.
